Working in an Office at Tax Time

Your employer should furnish a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement if you work in an office as an accounting or data entry clerk, secretary or administrative assistant.

Some of the items you may be able to deduct are; regulatory fees required by state or local governments, licenses or flat rate occupation taxes, subscriptions to journals or publications related to your profession, dues for professional associations, and equipment or supply expenses that are job related that are replicable within one year.

Certain work related education courses or seminars may also be deductible if they meets the requirements set forth. Generally, continuing education that meets the requirements include refresher courses, courses for new developments in your field and vocational courses. Courses that teach you a new trade or helps you meet a minimum requirements for your current carrier are not deductible. For example you cannot deduct education expenses for a degree in biology if you are an administrative assistant.
