Louisiana Individual Income Tax Provisions
Like many other states that assess individual income tax, Louisiana uses a joint filing system, similar to that used by the federal government for tax purposes. This system combines the incomes of married couples and taxes it based on a single amount. This applies the concept of taxing families as a single economic unit.
Also like the federal system, Louisiana starts with adjusted gross income to determine the tax base. However, there are a few major differences between what income the state includes versus the federal regulations.
Exemptions
Some forms of income are exempt from inclusion in the tax base as follows:
- Interest from U.S. Government bonds
- Civil Service and Military pension income
- Certain benefits from state pension plans
- Private retirement plans are excluded up to $6,000 per person for those over 65
- CZE and Active Duty Military income up to $30,000 for service outside of Louisiana
- Social Security benefits
- $6,000/person in permanent disability income
- Shareholder income from a bank organized as an S corporation
Deductions
State residents are also able to take deductions on their state income taxes. The standard deduction for Louisiana is $4,500 for single or married filing single taxpayers, and $9,000 for Married filing jointly, or head of household. Also, taxpayers are able to deduct the excess of federal itemized deductions over the limit for their income on the federal level. Additionally, deductions exist for:
- Federal income taxes
- Net gain on a state-domiciled business
- Student tuition assistance revenue trust deposits
- Federal disaster relief credits
- Up to $5,000 in retrofitting residences expenses
- Educational expenses for home-schooled dependents
- Hurricane recovery grants, loans, and benefits
- $500 for volunteer recreation departments and firefighters
