What is Child Tax Credit?

The Child Tax Credit is a refundable credit for taxpayers who have one or more qualifying dependent children under age 18 at the end of the tax year. (Note: If filing separately or divorced, only the parent who claims the child as a dependent qualifies for this credit.)

The credit is $2,000 per child for 2023.

The basic Child Tax Credit can directly reduce a tax liability, dollar for dollar, but is not refundable if it exceeds your tax liability.
